1-month internal benchmarks

Each update that will introduce a significant change in the full-chemistry simulation is tagged with an alpha version in Git. For each of these alpha versions, the GCST runs an internal 1-month benchmark simulation to isolate the impact from that update.

For more details on the update(s) included in each alpha version and a link to benchmark results, see this Google sheet.

Overview
Below we summarize the notable changes caused by specific updates. See also the internal benchmark results which isolate impacts from specific updates.

1. Add diel and day-of-week scale factors to global base emissions

This introduces small increases in emissions for CEDS species, especially over Africa and SE asia; most species show % change < 0.6%. Mean OH increases by 0.1%. Ratio plots show variation between ~0.992 and 1.007, so the changes are very small.

2. Updated 0.1x0.1 timezone file accounting for daylight savings

Mean OH decreased by -0.02%; ISOP emissions increased by 0.1%, most anthro & ship emissions show change less than +/-0.01%. Biogenic emissions show increases of 1.2x over Russia (where emissions are already small) and lesser over S. America, in a striped pattern due to time zone alignments.

3. Updated surface methane boundary condition using NOAA flask data

Differences are small (<0.1%) for all species. Global mean OH changed by 0.022%.

4. UCX bug fixes : (1) Use proper 4th index for WERADIUS array; (2) Get density of black carbon from the species database

Changes are mainly limited to BCPI aerosol in the stratosphere (ratio varies from 0.93 to 1.06) Decreases are most pronounced in the winter pole/midlatitudes above 5hPa and increases at the winter pole between 90S and 60S and 40-10 hPa. Mean OH increases by 0.0009%

5. Update volcano emissions through 2023

SO2 volcanic degassing emissions change by -1% due to updating the inventory version. The impact on all species concentrations is small. Global mean OH decreases by -0.014%.

6. Fix uptake coefficients on stratospheric aerosol

Mean OH increases by 0.0015%. Most species show very small changes (0.99-1.01) observed in NO2, NO3, and VOC observed in most ratio plots, except for: (1) HNO2 concentrations increase over the S. Pole by up to 3X skyward of 40hPa; (2) MPAN concentrations decreased by ~0.75 at ~10hPa between south of the equator; (3) NO, NO3, NPHEN concentrations decreased by 50% at ~100hPa and the S. Pole.

7. Fix PBL level calculations

Mean OH decreased by -0.23%. NO, NO2, HNO3 ship emissions (via ParaNOx) show very small diffs ~ 0.2% or less. NOx concentrations show increases of up to 1.4X, especially over tropical oceans; there is also a slight decrease off the coast of W. Africa. Bry/BrOx show decreases in the tropical oceans. ISOP and related species show increases over S. America and Africa.

8. Updated gravitational settling, dry mass-weighted mean diameters and hygroscopic growth in aerosol dry deposition

Mean OH decreases by 0.27%. DST1 increases in the Sahel by p to ~0.3 ug/m3 while other dust species show 2-5% DST2, DST3, DST4 show sizeable decreases (-11 to and -40 ug/m3) over Morocco and Western Sahara but relatively small changes where concentrations are already low. Other aerosols (e.g. NIT, NH3, etc) show most pronounced increases in the boreal regions but relatively small in magnitude, along with a general increase worldwide. Coarse seasalt shows large decreases but the bromine & chlorine seasalt species show very small changes.

9. Replace ISORROPIA II with HETP aerosol thermodynamics

Mean OH decreased by 0.37%. Mostly small changes in aerosol species. Large decreases noted over the S. Pacific/Southern Ocean for SALCAL, with corresponding increases in SALACL. In general, course seasalt aerosols show decreases and fine seasalt aerosols show increases, perhaps reflecting a different partitioning in equilibrium between HETP/ISORROPIA. SALA, SALC, DST*, BC*, OC* species are not affected.

10. Parameterized Effective Radius for SNA and OM aerosols

Mean OH decreases by -0.261%. Changes to AOD_SO4 and AOD_OCPI are consistent with those observed in the plot Haihui posted in PR #1902. SO4 and OC aerosol optical depth decreases by 20% or more in boreal regions, sub-Saharan Africa, India, China, and Indonesia/Thailand/Malaysia.

11. Global continental chlorine (pCl and HCl) emissions

Concentrations of HCl increase over the continents as expected. Small increases can also be seen in other chlorine species. The global mass of ClNO2 increases the most by 20%. Global mean OH decreased by -0.023%.
