1-month internal benchmarks

Each update that will introduce a significant change in the full-chemistry simulation is tagged with an alpha version in Git. For each of these alpha versions, the GCST runs an internal 1-month benchmark simulation to isolate the impact from that update.

For more details on the update(s) included in each alpha version and a link to benchmark results, see this Google sheet.

Overview
Below we summarize the notable changes caused by specific updates. See also the internal benchmark results which isolate impacts from specific updates.

1. Update reactions with new JPL & IUPAC recommendations

Kelvin Bates wrote, "Changes to most species' concentrations are minor, but all are well-documented in the forthcoming paper. Among the largest changes are (a) faster propane oxidation resulting in lower propane mixing ratios; (b) new propane branching ratios causing higher acetone production and mixing ratios; (c) lower C1 Criegee Intermediate + H2O reaction rate causing lower HMHP production; (d) lower Peracetic acid (MAP) + OH rate causing higher MAP mixing ratios and correspondingly lower mixing ratios of PAN and acetic acid; (e) slight increases in NOx, HO2, OH, H2O2 (all <2% in the troposphere) and decreases in surface ozone (-4%) and CO (<1%) due to a whole host of competing effects from changed reaction rates." Global mean OH changed by 0.15%.

2. Interim fix for runaway HMS chemistry

Differences are very small (<<1%) for most species except for HMS which increases by 3%. Global mean OH changed by 0.006%.

3. Cloud-J for computing photolysis rates as default

Changes are relatively small (<3%) for all species as expected from the change from Fast-JX to Cloud-J. Global mean OH changes by 0.38%.

4. Fix bugs setting strat aerosol OD passed to Fast-JX

Changes are small as expected due to J-value changes. Global mean OH changed by -0.0018%. Lizzie Lundgren wrote, "Differences in stratosphere are clustered towards poles which is consistent with the new inclusion of polar strat cloud contribution for computation of J-values."

5. Bug fix for dry deposition to snow and ice

Changes are small and are mainly restricted to the polar regions. Global mean OH changes by 0.0072%.

6. Bug fix for application of FRSNO in land cover arrays

Changes are very small. Global mean OH changed by -0.00045%.

7. TOMAS in GCHP

Changes are on the level of numerical noise due to rebuilding the fullchem mechanism in KPP with new dummy species. Global mean OH changes by 0.0008%.

8. Add nitrate aerosol to Ox family definition in gckpp.kpp

Differences are small (< 0.01%) for all species and global mean OH changes by 0.003%. These changes are introduced from rebuilding the fullchem mechanism in KPP.
