1-month internal benchmarks

Each update that will introduce a significant change in the full-chemistry simulation is tagged with an alpha version in Git. For each of these alpha versions, the GCST runs an internal 1-month benchmark simulation to isolate the impact from that update.

For more details on the update(s) included in each alpha version and a link to benchmark results, see this Google sheet.

Overview
Below we summarize the notable changes caused by specific updates. See also the internal benchmark results which isolate impacts from specific updates.

1. Nitrate photolysis

This update causes large changes. NOx increases in the N. Hemisphere, with the largest changes over the tropics. Surface O3 increases by up to 3ppb. Global mean OH changes by 8.39%. This is consistent with the results of Shah et al. where they reported, "Including pNO photolysis in the model significantly increases modeled NOx concentrations below 6 km... The largest increase is in the tropics (30∘ S–30∘ N)... The effect of pNO photolysis is generally smaller above 6 km because of lower pNO concentrations... The ozone concentrations in the upper troposphere in the model are, on average, 20 ppbv higher than the ATom observations."

2. Turn SSA debromination on by default

This updates adds back the BrSALA and BrSALC emission sources. It also impacts other emissions over oceans (iodine, PARANOX). Bromine species increase considerably over oceans and ozone decreases by up to 10 ppb over the Souther Ocean. Global mean OH changes by -1.23%.

3. Reinstate Iy sink reactions on alkaline sea salt aerosol and remove IONO2 recycling on alkaline sea salt aerosol

Concentrations of ISALA/ISALC increase and IONO/IONO2 decrease over oceans as expected from restoring the Iy sink reactions. Ozone increases very slightly (max 0.005 ppb). Global mean OH changes by 0.017%.

4. Fix sea salt alkalinity and heterogeneous acid-catalyzed halogen chemistry

Becky wrote, "This fix causes BrO to decrease everywhere as expected. O3 is more complicated, showing increases in the SH and decreases in the NH." We see consistent changes here. OH increases over S. Hemisphere oceans and decreases over N. Hemisphere oceans. Overall, global mean OH changes by -1.66%.

5. Add S(IV)+HOBr and S(IV)+HOCl reactions into fullchem mechanism (they had been inadvertently omitted)

Becky writes, "This does not change the enhanced sulfate production rate (SR) because SR is the same but is now split up between O3, HOBr, and HOCl instead of all being attributed to O3... he changes to SO2, SO4, HOBr, HBr, HOCl, HCl, O3, and BrO for January 2019 are small to negligible." We see consistent changes here. Global mean OH changes by -0.0016%.

6. Bug fix: Initialize CO2 to a relevant value for full-chemistry

The CO2 fix causes very small changes in other species. CO2 changes are large in the global mass table because it is no longer being forced to zero. The global mean OH change is 0.00048%.

7. Fix bug in HOBr uptake rate calculation

Viral wrote, "Fixing this will increase the loss of HOBr (to HBr) and could lower BrOx levels, with a larger effect for simulations that include sea salt aerosol debromination." The 1-month benchmark confirms these changes, with decreases in BrOx and increases in O3. The overall impact on global mean OH is small at -0.006%.

8. Update VOC fire emissions and adding lumped furan

Large changes are observed in biomass burning emissions due to changing GFED4 emission factors. Two new species (BUTDI and FURA) are added. The change in global mean OH is -0.18%.

9. Restore vertical allocation of CEDS energy and industry emissions

Differences caused by this update are small, and can be seen as reduction of anthropogenic emissions and species concentrations at the surface primarily over land as well as increases aloft. Total column emissions show changes on the level of numerical noise. Global mean OH changes by 0.17%
