GFED2 monthly data for 2008
As of July 2009, the GFED2 monthly data is now available for years 1997-2008. The new 2008 data is available in bpch format at:
ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_1x1/GFED2_200601/2008
You will need to make a small modification in routine GFED2_COMPUTE_BIOMASS (in gfed2_biomass_mod.f) in order to update the maximum available year of data. Look for the lines:
! Availability of MONTHLY data !------------------------------- ELSE IF ( LGFED2BB ) THEN CALL GFED2_AVAILABLE( YYYY, 1997, 2007 )
and change the 2007 to 2008:
! Availability of MONTHLY data !------------------------------- ELSE IF ( LGFED2BB ) THEN !----------------------------------------------------------- ! Prior to 7/8/09: ! GFED2 2008 monthly data is now available (bmy, 7/8/09) !CALL GFED2_AVAILABLE( YYYY, 1997, 2007 ) !----------------------------------------------------------- CALL GFED2_AVAILABLE( YYYY, 1997, 2008 )
You may also download the updated version of gfed2_biomass_mod.f from:
ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/patches/v8-02-02 get gfed2_biomass_mod.f
This fix will be standardized in GEOS-Chem v8-02-03.
NOAA sea-surface temperature for 2005-2008
Lyatt Jaegle has processed the NOAA sea-surface-temperature files for the years 2005-2008. These will be available from our FTP site:
ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_1x1/SST_200508 get README get SST.geos.1x1.2005 get SST.geos.1x1.2006 get SST.geos.1x1.2007 get SST.geos.1x1.2008
after Tuesday (July 14th) morning's reboot.
You will also need to update the line of code in routine READ_SST (in sulfate_mod.f) from:
IF ( THISYEAR >= 1985 .and. THISYEAR <= 2004 ) THEN
to:
IF ( THISYEAR >= 1985 .and. THISYEAR <= 2008 ) THEN
Or, if you wish, you may download the updated version of sulfate_mod.f from
ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/patches/v8-01-02 get sulfate_mod.f
This fix will be standardized in GEOS-Chem v8-02-03.
GEOS-Chem v8-02-03
The next release of GEOS-Chem will be GEOS-Chem v8-02-03. This beta version will contain everything in GEOS-Chem v8-02-02, plus:
- Kpp chemical solver package (Adrian Sandu group @ Virginia Tech)
- ICOADS ship emissions (Chulkyu Lee)
- Use of GEOS-5 ozone columns (C. Carouge, still in validation)
- Removal of support for obsolete SGI and COMPAQ compilers
This version is currently in beta-testing. Stay tuned for more information!
GEOS-5 met field reprocessing
Status
As of July 2009, the complete GEOS-5 archive from 2004-2008 has now been reprocessed in order to correct the optical depth problem reported several months ago.
You may download the data from:
Nested China ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_0.5x0.666_CH.d/GEOS_5/YYYY/MM/ 2 x 2.5 Global ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_2x2.5.d/GEOS_5/YYYY/MM/ 4 x 5 Global ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_4x5.d/GEOS_5/YYYY/MM/
where YYYY/MM/ are the year and month of data that you wish to download.
As of July 13, 2009, GEOS-5 data is available from 2003/12 thru 2009/05. We should get caught-up to real-time later this week.
Updated OTD/LIS redistribution factors for lightning
Lee Murray has regenerated the OTD/LIS local redistribution factors for use with the new reprocessed GEOS-5 met data fields. The scale factors were based on GEOS-5 met data from Dec 2003 through Feb 2009.
You may obtain the new OTD/LIS scale factors from:
ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_4x5/lightning_NOx_200907 mget * cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_2x2.5/lightning_NOx_200907 mget * cd pub/geos-chem/data/GEOS_0.5x0.666_CH/lightning_NOx_200907 mget *
The OTD/LIS files are named with the following convention:
OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v4.geos4.* OTD-LIS-Local-Redist.CTH.v4.geos5.*
Note that the version of the data has been updated from v3 to v4, in order to distinguish them from the files in the previous directory lightning_NOx_200709/.
NOTE: The GEOS-4 files in lightning_NOx_200907/ are identical to those in lightning_NOx_200709/. For consistency and simplicity of coding, they have been renamed from v3 to v4.
You will also need to get an updated version of source code file lightning_nox_mod.f, which has been modified to read in these new OTD/LIS local factors. You may obtain this from:
ftp ftp.as.harvard.edu cd /lustre/pub/ftp/pub/geos-chem/patches/v8-02-02
NOTE: You must also compile GEOS-Chem with the
#define IN_CLOUD_OD 'IN_CLOUD_OD'
switch activated in the define.h header file. However, at a later time the IN_CLOUD_OD switch will be removed from the code. We will keep it for now in case some GEOS-Chem users may not have all of the GEOS-5 met data downloaded onto their systems.
ESMF and Column Code Update
We have created a new GEOS-Chem column code wiki page. Please check back here for the latest developments!
