:#Hongyu and Mat have pointed out what appear to be diagnostic problems in the GCHP transport tracer output, the new operation budget output, and IO. These should be fixed by the GCST.
:#Jenny brought up a good point about defining chemical families in the benchmark and keeping track of new/old species names. We will do this.
:In the meantime, the 1-month benchmark is approved and we can move on to the 1-year benchmark.

NOTE: There are large decreases observed in AOD from isoprene SOA in this version. These changes are partially due to removing some species that were included in the isoprene SOA calculation in aerosol_mod.F, but are mainly due to the bug fix for the AOD from isoprene SOA diagnostic that went into GEOS-Chem 12.7.1.


Ozone deposition to the ocean

This update increases O3 concentrations over the ocean at the surface by up to 5 ppb, primarily at high latitudes. Global mean OH is increased by 0.15% with these changes.


Use online DustDead, MEGAN, SeaSalt, and SoilNOx emissions for benchmark simulations

The entries below from the emissions tables by species show differences caused by turning the DustDead, MEGAN, SeaSalt, and SoilNOx extensions back on in benchmark simulations. These changes are similar, but of the opposite sign, to the changes observed in the GEOS-Chem 12.4.0 benchmark when offline emissions were implemented.

Thank you for this 1-month benchmark of 12.8.0 and your inspections and comments.
  1. Kelvin and Mat have confirmed that the changes are consistent with their scientific updates to isoprene chemistry and ozone deposition to ocean.
  2. I went through the benchmarks and don’t see any unexpected results.
  3. Hongyu and Mat have pointed out what appear to be diagnostic problems in the GCHP transport tracer output, the new operation budget output, and IO. These should be fixed by the GCST.
  4. Jenny brought up a good point about defining chemical families in the benchmark and keeping track of new/old species names. We will do this.
In the meantime, the 1-month benchmark is approved and we can move on to the 1-year benchmark.

1-year Transport Tracers benchmarks

Three 1-year Transport Tracers benchmark simulation were performed using GEOS-Chem 12.8.0:

  • GEOS-Chem Classic with the standard wet deposition scheme
  • GEOS-Chem Classic with the Luo et al. (2019) wet deposition scheme
  • GCHP with the standard wet deposition scheme

The GEOS-Chem Classic (w/ standard wetdep) simulation was spun up for 10 years, and the resulting restart file was used to initialize all three 1-year transport tracer benchmarks listed above.

Both GEOS-Chem Classic simulations utilized 4° x 5° GEOS-FP met fields for the year 2016. These simulations can be used to validate the Luo wet dep scheme which is offered as an option starting in this version.

The GCHP simulation used 0.25° x 0.3125° global GEOS-FP met fields for 2016 and ran at c48 resolution.
