GEOS-5
NASA/GMAO ceased production of GEOS-5.2.0 data as of June 2013. See GMAO's GEOS Near-Real Time Data Products page for more details. We recommend that you use either GEOS-FP, which is the current operational GMAO met data product, or MERRA-2, which is the current GMAO reanalysis product. GEOS-5 was de-supported in GEOS-Chem v11-02.

Overview
GEOS-5 is our GEOS-Chem met field archive of the GMAO GEOS-5.1.0 and GEOS-5.2.0 data products. Both of these were former NASA/GMAO operational data products. Data is available for years 2004 through 2012, with partial coverage for 2013. These data have a native resolution of 0.5° lat x 0.666° lon x 72 hybrid levels. We have archived these data to the GEOS-Chem global and nested horizontal grids.
The table below lists the GMAO version numbers corresponding to specific dates in our GEOS-5 archive.
GMAO version number |
Start date (in GEOS-5 archive) |
End date (in GEOS-5 archive) |
---|---|---|
GEOS-5.1.0 | 01 Dec 2003 | 31 Aug 2008 |
GEOS-5.2.0 | 01 Sep 2008 | 31 May 2013 |

MERRA
NASA/GMAO ceased production of MERRA data as of June 2013. See GMAO's GEOS Near-Real Time Data Products page for more details. We recommend that you use MERRA-2, which is the current GMAO reanalysis product. MERRA was de-supported in GEOS-Chem v11-02.
The GMAO MERRA data product is a 30-year reanalysis done with the GEOS Data Assimilation System (GEOS-DAS) version GEOS-5.2.0. We have archived this data to the GEOS-Chem 2° x 2.5° and 4° x 4.5° grids. For more information about the MERRA reanalysis product, please see:

GEOS-FP data product
NASA/GMAO has made a major upgrade to its near real time (NRT) GEOS-5 data production system. Designated as GMAO-FP (which we refer to as GEOS-FP), the new system includes many scientific improvements to the dynamics, physics, and the analysis. These improvements improve the quality the GEOS assimilated meterological data. Additionally, a few major engineering changes are also present in the new system, including:
- the horizontal spatial resolution is increased to 1/4° lat x 5/16° lon
- file format is changed from the current HDF-4 to netCDF-4/HDF-5
- temporal frequency of 3-D products is changed from 6 hr to 3 hr
- temporal frequency of most 2-D products is changed from 3 hr to 1 hr
- new variables are added such as ocean and aerosols fields
- The groupings of variables in the GEOS-FP file collections are considerably different from those of the previous operational data product (GEOS-5.2.0).

Acknowledge the source of GEOS-5 data in your publications
If your GEOS-Chem research depends on either the GEOS-5.2.0, MERRA, GEOS-FP, or MERRA-2 meteorological data products, please consider adding an acknowledgment to your citations, such as:
The GEOS-5.2.0 / MERRA / GEOS-FP / MERRA-2 data used in this study/project have been provided by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
