Overview
On this page, we provide a list of species included in GEOS-Chem 12.8.0 and earlier versions. It does not include species information for version 13 or beyond. Starting in version 14 (possibly 14.1) we will include species information on ReadTheDocs rather than the GEOS-Chem wiki.
Please see the following resources for general information about how species are defined in GEOS-Chem:
- Physical properties of GEOS-Chem species
- GEOS-Chem species units
- GEOS-Chem species database
- Adding new species
- Adding passive species to GEOS-Chem
- Species indexing in GEOS-Chem
Legend
The tables in the following sections list the species used in each of the various GEOS-Chem simulations. Several categories—corresponding to fields of the GEOS-Chem species database—are displayed. Note that some categories are only appropriate to full-chemistry simulations.
For the sake of clarity, we have omitted several species properties (i.e. Henry's law constants, dry deposition parameters, rainout & washout parameters, etc.). For a complete list of these properties, please see our Physical properties of GEOS-Chem wiki page.
Item | Description |
---|---|
Species | Abbreviated name of the species. This will be the variable name corresponding to the species in netCDF restart and output files. |
Full name | A longer, descriptive name for the species. This will be saved to netCDF restart and output files under the long_name variable attribute. |
Molec wt | Molecular weight of the species in g mol-1.
Some hydrocarbon species are carried in equivalent carbon atoms. For these species, the molecular weight of carbon (12) will be listed along with the number of carbon atoms (1C, 2C, 3C, etc) per species. Species for which no molecular weight is displayed are non-advected species. These have lifetimes so short that they never move away from the grid box in which they are produced. |
Gas or Aer | Denotes whether the species is in the gas or aerosol phase. This determines how the species dry deposits and/or wet deposits. |
Advect | Is the species subject to advection, cloud convection, and boundary layer mixing? |
Drydep | Is the species subject to dry deposition? |
Wetdep | Is the species soluble and subject to wet deposition? |
The following quantities are only relevant for full-chemistry simulations: | |
Formula | Chemical formula of the species. |
Chem | Is the species contained in one of the pre-built KPP chemistry mechanisms used by GEOS-Chem?
If not, then the species will have its chemistry or loss performed outside of the KPP solver (e.g. in the aerosol modules). |
Mechanisms | Displays the GEOS-Chem chemistry mechanisms to which the species belongs. |
Photol | Is the species included in the FAST-JX photolysis mechanism? |
Structure | A graphic showing the molecular structure of the species. |
Ox | Shows the number of molecules of the species that will be included in the computation of the P(Ox) and L(Ox) diagnostic families. |
Version added/updated | The version this species was added to GEOS-Chem or the latest version this species was updated (if available). |

TOMAS aerosol microphysics
There are currently 4 options for TOMAS aerosol microphysics simulations:
Option | Description | Compile with |
---|---|---|
TOMAS12 | Uses 12 size bins (nn = 12) | TOMAS12=y |
TOMAS15 | Uses 15 size bins (nn = 15) | TOMAS15=y |
TOMAS30 | Uses 30 size bins (nn = 30) | TOMAS30=y |
TOMAS40 | Uses 40 size bins (nn = 40) | TOMAS40=y |
TOMAS aerosol microphysics simulations carry the same species as the Tropchem simulation, plus the additional size-resolved aerosol species:
Species | Full name | Molec wt (g/mol) |
Gas or Aer | Advect | Drydep | Wetdep |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AW{1..nn} | Aerosol water, size bins 1 - nn | 18 | Aer | X | ||
DUST{1..nn} | Mineral dust, size bins 1 - nn
|
100 | Aer | X | X | |
ECIL{1..nn} | Hydrophilic elemental carbon, size bins 1 - nn | 12 | Aer | X | X | |
ECOB{1..nn} | Hydrophobic elemental carbon, size bins 1 - nn | 12 | Aer | X | ||
H2SO4 | Sulfuric acid | 98 | Gas[1] | X | X | X |
NK{1..nn} | Aerosol number, size bins 1 - nn | 1 | Aer | X | X | X |
OCIL{1..nn} | Hydrophilic organic carbon, size bins 1 - nn | 12 | Aer | X | X | |
OCOB{1..nn} | Hydrophobic organic carbon, size bins 1 - nn | 12 | Aer | X | X | |
SF{1..nn} | Sulfate aerosol, size bins 1 - nn | 96 | Aer | X | X | |
SS{1..nn} | Sea salt aerosol, size bins 1 - nn | 58.5 | Aer | X | X |
NOTES:
- The TOMAS H2SO4 species dry-deposits like a gas, but wet-deposits like an aerosol. Therefore, we need to give H2SO4 both gas-phase and aerosol parameters in the GEOS-Chem species database.

Passive species
Starting in GEOS-Chem v11-01, it is possible to add one or more passive species to any simulation type. For more information, see this wiki post on adding passive species.
