Revision as of 17:03, 21 December 2015

On this page we list the current priorities for GEOS-Chem development. This list was compiled by the user Working Groups at the last International GEOS-Chem Meeting (IGC7) in May 2015 and has been continuously updated since based on code readiness and input from the Working Groups and the Steering Committee.

We also invite you to view our GEOS-Chem Support Team project management board on Trello.com, which shows the current GCST workflow.

List of priorities as of May 2015

Items "Awaiting release" will be part of the next version release of GEOS-Chem and are actively being incorporated into the standard model and benchmarked. Other items are in different stages of readiness and will be included in future versions of the model.

Awaiting release

Item Author(s) Status
Science updates
Correction for wet/dry pressure Lizzie Lundgren (Harvard)
Meemong Lee (JPL)
  • Included in v11-01a, which was approved on 7 Jul 2015
  • Update 30 July 2015: A moisture signature is observed in CO2 concentrations during carbon simulations with zero emissions and constant 370 ppm initial conditions. The moisture signature is expected for wet mixing ratio (v/v total air) but not dry mixing ratio (v/v dry air). This issue is currently under investigation.

  • Included in v11-01b, which was approved on 19 Aug 2015
Impaction scavenging for hydrophobic BC Qiaoqiao Wang (Max Planck Institute)
  • Included in v11-01b, which was approved on 19 Aug 2015
Homogeneous IN removal Qiaoqiao Wang (Max Planck Institute)
  • Included in v11-01b, which was approved on 19 Aug 2015

  • Full integration of MERRA2 in GEOS-Chem (i.e. making "full-chemistry" simulations compatible with MERRA2) will take longer.
    • Scale factors for lightning, dust, and other emissions will need to be recomputed based on 1-year (or longer) simulations.

NASA/GMAO
  • This will be an ongoing process that will occur simultaneously as the above science updates are brought into GEOS-Chem.
Documentation
Update wiki documentation for GMAO met field products:
  • Naming convention used by GMAO
  • Version numbers corresponding to dates of met field data
GEOS-Chem Support Team

Becky Alexander wrote:

I've incorporated both the metal catalyzed chemistry and the sulfate isotopes into v10. The metal catalyzed chemistry is much slower than it is when run in v8 and v9. I still have not yet figured out why. I'm not comfortable adding this into the standard model until I figure it out. The emissions are quite different in v10 because of HEMCO, and metal catalyzed chemistry is very sensitive to emissions of primary anthropogenic sulfate, so that's my current hypothesis for the difference. I will probably not get back to debugging this until late October.
