1-month internal benchmarks

Each update that will introduce a significant change in the full-chemistry simulation is tagged with an alpha version in Git. For each of these alpha versions, the GEOS-Chem Support Team runs an internal 1-month benchmark simulation to isolate the impact from that update.

For more details on the update(s) included in each alpha version and a link to benchmark results, see this Google sheet.

Overview
Below we summarize the notable changes caused by specific updates. See also the internal benchmark results which isolate impacts from specific updates.

1. Update to ESMF 8.6.1 and MAPL 2.59 for GCHP

This update causes small differences at the level of numerical noise in GCHP simulations. GC-Classic is unaffected.

2. Fixed OM/OC ratio for OCPO in SimpleSOA

Mean OH decreased by -0.0026%. Global masses change by no more than +/- 0.5% (with many species being much lower). BRSALA and BRSALC show decreases over continents at the surface (up to 5% and 3% respectively). SALCCL shows slight increases in central S. America and Africa. Other aerosol species do not show significant differences in surface and zonal means.

3. Update convective washout for Grell-Freitas and Luo wet deposition

Mean OH increased by 0.096%. NO2 ship emissions increase by 1.4%, HNO3 ship emissions decrease by 1.2%, and NO and O3 ship emisisons show very small increases (due to PARANOx). OH conc at surface decreases mostly everywhere, especially in the tropics, where decreases of 20-40% are seen. NOx at the surface increases in the S. Atlantic and Antartica (where concs are very low) with a corresponding decrease in the S. China Sea. These patterns are also evident in the zonal means. Bromine, Chlorine, and Iodine species show increases of a few percent at the equator/tropics and up to 200hPa (caused by removal of washout)., HBr shows decreases of up to 40% from 90S-50S. HI shows a slight increase in the tropics/midlats skyward of 800hPa, but decreases near the surface and in the polar regions. Other soluble species typically have increased concentrations due to less removal by convective scavenging. NOTE: This update caused a parallelization error which was later fixed in PR #3029.

4. Conserve initial restart file mass in GC-Classic runs #3014

Mean OH increases by 0.000098%. Most global masses change by less than +/- 0.001%, with a few exceptions. SALAAL and SALCAL shows very slight increases in at the surface areas where concentrations are low. The differences in other species are typically of order +/-0.001%.

5. Fix precision of GCHP import of area from advection

GCHP benchmarks show small numerical-noise differences because the area imported from FV3 has been changed from REAL*4 to REAL*8. Mean OH increases by 0.000673%. GC-Classic simulations are unaffected.

6. Updates for GCHP conservation of restart file species mass

GCHP benchmarks show small differences due to the scaling of species by the ratio of import delta pressure from GEOS-Chem (ultimately from restart file) and delta pressure computed from import meteorology Mean OH increases by 0.002637%. GC-Classic simulations are unaffected.

7. Replace DustDead HEMCO extension with DustL23M (7 dust bins)

Mean OH decreases by 1.55%. Total dust mass in alpha.16 was 17.6 Tg, now increased to 20.3Tg. Species masses typically change by no more than +/- 5%. No change in BC/OC aerosols. NH4 and SO4 surface increase over India by ~0.5ppb each, whereas NIT decreases by up to 0.14ppb. SO4 shows a smaller increase over the Gulf of Mexico. Complex SOA increases by up to 0.02 ug/m3 over continents, with the largest increase (1.4%) being over India. NITs shows slight decreases in absolute terms globally, whereas other seasalt species at surface generally show small-ish differences. O3 at surface decreases globally by up to ~8ppb (largest over India), CO at surface is largely unaffected, OH decreases in the mid-latitudes with a decrease of 2.5ppbv over the Arabian peninsula, and a small increase over central Asia. NOx shows decreases up to 0.1 ppb over Arabia and increases up to 0.1 ppb over India. J-Values at surface typically show changes of +/- 15%.

Evaluation of the DustL23M update by Dandan Zhang (GitHub: @1Dandan)

I have inspected the implementation of 7 dust bins and related changes for dust scheme, emitted dust size distribution and dry/wet depositions. They all make sense to me.

For the total dust emission changes, my annual results in the year of 2018 also show emission increase of 45.3% relative to the base case (see Table 3 of my paper). The emission increase is dominated by the updated size distribution (Kok 2011) with larger coarse dust than the default size distribution (see Figure 8a of the same paper). This is consistent with prior studies (e.g., Meng et al, 2022, Kok et al., 2017) showing the underestimation of coarse dust and overestimation of fine dust.

For the total dust mass, I checked my annual results in the year of 2018. It shows increase of 34% than the base case. The less increase of dust mass than dust emissions is probably due to the modification of updated larger dry deposition rate as shown in Figure 9 in the paper. I also noticed a smaller increase in July 2018 from my results, showing increase of 22% than the base case for total dust mass.

For OH reduction with the increased total dust mass, it seems plausible as the heterogenous uptake of oxidants from increased dust concentration could reduce the OH concentrations.

I also confirmed that the reconciliation of aerodynamic diameter of dust is implemented in the default diagnostics of PM25 and PM10, as shown in the specific code blocks here and here.

For the twice increase of the largest dust size bin from the updates than the default is mostly due to the new particle size distribution used. The mass fraction of each size bin is shown below:

Diameter
(μm)
Bin1
0.2 - 0.36
Bin2
0.36 - 0.6
Bin3
0.6 - 1.2
Bin4
1.2 - 2.0
Bin5
2.0 - 3.6
Bin6
3.6 - 6.0
Bin7
6.0 - 12.0
Default (%) 0.0534 0.254 1.90 5.44 19.2 34.9 38.2
Kok2011 (%) 0.0334 0.159 1.19 3.43 12.5 25.7 57.0
Fennec (%) 0.269 0.526 2.54 2.72 11.6 16.0 66.4

The Kok2011 is the particle size distribution used in the revised GEOS-Chem model. The fraction of DustBin7 is 1.5 times larger than the default, which is also shown in Figure 8a with no curving down beyond ~7 micrometer in geometric diameter of the Kok2011 than the default particle size distribution. Combining with the increased total dust mass, the doubling of DustBin7 looks reasonable to me.
