On this page we shall provide an overview of the DICE-Africa anthropogenic emissions inventory. This inventory has been incorporated into GEOS-Chem v11-02 and newer versions via the HEMCO emissions component.

Scale DICE-Africa emissions to address errors in inventory

This fix (Git ID: 01e4788e was included in GEOS-Chem 12.5.0, which was released on 09 Sep 2019.

Avoid double-counting between DICE-Africa and other inventories

This fix was included in GEOS-Chem 12.0.0.

DICE-Africa does not account for all anthropogenic pollution and there is overlap between what is in DICE and what is in EDGAR, so summing the two inventories would lead to double counting of pollution from vehicles and residential burning of traditional biofuels. I couldn’t think of a more eloquent way to sum together a selection of EDGAR emissions and all DICE emissions than to include relevant EDGAR emissions in the DICE-Africa brackets. I tried applying a reverse/ante regional map (0 for Africa; 1 everywhere else) to EDGAR emissions, but this doesn’t work and probably requires coding in HEMCO to accommodate this type of mask. This fix resolves all issues, and hopefully doesn’t introduce new issues. It didn’t when I implemented this in an earlier version of HEMCO with GEOS-Chem v10-01. I also ran a few tests with the HEMCO standalone file to confirm this. This approach also ensures stability when users use DICE for Africa and want to switch between different global emission inventories (e.g. HTAP or EDGAR).

Use unique names for DICE-Africa entries in HEMCO_Config.rc

This fix was included in GEOS-Chem 12.0.0.

In the original implementation of the DICE-Africa emissions in GEOS-Chem v11-02f, the same HEMCO container names were re-used for different emission sectors. For example, the name DICE_CO was found in multiple locations throughout the HEMCO_Config.rc file:

Reusing the same container name multiple times in HEMCO_Config.rc has no effect when running GEOS-Chem "Classic", but will cause GCHP to fail when reading data from disk. To avoid this situation, we have rewritten the HEMCO_Config.template files that ship with the GEOS-Chem Unit Tester to always use a unique container name for DICE-Africa entries. For example, we now have:
