When you start a new AWS EC2 cloud instance, you will typically load an AMI (Amazon Machine Image) with a pre-defined computational environment.  The AMI will contain an operating system, compiler version, and required software libraries for GEOS-Chem.  The relevant Unix environment variables will also be defined properly.
