Overview

GEOS-Chem can archive several different types of quantities to diagnostic output. These diagnostics are used to assess how the model is performing.

The tables below give a brief overview of the different diagnostics that are supported in GEOS-Chem. These will be explained in more depth in subsequent chapters.

Currently-supported GEOS-Chem diagnostics

GEOS-Chem 12 and later versions currently can generate the following types of diagnostic output:

Diagnostic Description Settings are specified in
netCDF diagnostics (aka “History”)
  • Gridded instantaneous output for species concentrations and other quantities
  • Gridded time-averaged output for species concentrations and other quantities
The HISTORY.rc file
Guide to HEMCO emissions diagnostics
  • Gridded instantaneous output for emissions quantities
  • Gridded time-averaged output for emissions quantities
The HEMCO_Diagn.rc file
ObsPack diagnostic
  • Point output of species concentrations and met fields at surface locations
  • Can also be used for flight tracks (with some pre-processing)
NOAA ObsPack format files
Planeflight diagnostic The Planeflight.dat.YYYYMMDD files

GEOS-Chem diagnostics that are being phased out

GEOS-Chem 12 currently supports these diagnostics. However, they will be phased out in a future version.

Diagnostic Description Settings are specified in
Binary punch (aka bpch) diagnostics
  • Gridded instantaneous output for species concentrations, emissions, and other quantities
  • Gridded time-averaged output for species concentrations, emissions, and other quantities
